Technology: Knowledge Engineering & Knowledge Representation

Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Representation are one of the fundamental parts of an Artificial Intelligence system. In this article, we will go through these concepts and understand how it is used in the field of AI. Knowledge Engineering First, let us understand what is Knowledge Engineering. " Knowledge Engineering refers to all technical, scientific and social aspects involved in building, maintaining and using the knowledge-based system" Knowledge-based systems or KBS is a computer program that reasons and uses the knowledge base to solve complex problems. The subsystem of a KBS include: 1. Knowledge base:  It is a computer program which stores complex structured and unstructured information that a computer system uses. This exhibits opposite properties of relational database systems. Knowledge base stores structured data but not as a table with numbers and strings, but as pointers to other objects that in turn has additional ...

Technology: Artificial Intelligence (AI)

We get to hear a lot of hype about AI and its applications. AI eases human life or as some believe it is dangerous. This article will give you a brief idea about AI, its application and the impact on the world.    What is AI? AI is a contrast to natural intelligence exhibited by humans. It is a machine which is designed to perceive the events and take actions with maximum probability of success. In a simpler word, the machine mimics human minds. AI replicates the cognitive functions of the human brain which is mainly learning and problem-solving.  As the hype grew through many years, a term came into picture i.e. "AI Effect". It means "whatever hasn't been done yet". Some of the AI capabilities include:  Understanding human speech Competing in strategic games Automated cars Routing in content delivery network Military simulations AI was founded as a part of academic discipline in 1956. It is the combination of various fields like co...

Book Review: The Underground Railroad

Blurb Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. All the slaves lead a hellish existence, but Cora has it worse than the most; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is approaching womanhood where it is clear that even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a slave recently arrived from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they take the perilous decision to escape the North.   In Whitehead's razor-sharp imagining of the antebellum South, the Underground Railroad has assumed a physical form: a dilapidated box-car pulled along subterranean tracks by a steam locomotive, picking up fugitives wherever it can. Thus Cora embarks on a harrowing journey, seeking true freedom, pursued relentlessly by a terrifying slave catcher named Ridgeway.  As Whitehead brilliantly recreates the unique terrors for black people in the pre-Civil War era, his narrative seamlessly weaves the saga of America, from the brutal importation of Africa...

Book Review: The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion

Blurb Meet Don Tillman. Don is getting married. He just doesn't know who to yet. But he has designed a very detailed questionnaire to help him find the perfect woman. One thing he already knows, though, is that it's not Rosie. Absolutely, completely, definitely not. Review Don Tillman, a 39-year-old Geneticist tries to find a suitable wife using science. After undergoing a lot of analysis he designs a questionnaire. He thinks that these set of questions will lead him to find a suitable wife. This story is adorable. There were a lot of funny moments. The writing is really good and also the characters are so cute. I really liked the idea of finding a perfect partner using concepts of research methodology and statistics. I guess some of my friends could use the same techniques to find a partner πŸ˜„ πŸ˜„πŸ˜„since they are working in the field of data analysis.  Characters Don Tillman:   He is a weird science guy. He is too nerdy similar to Sheldon Cooper. Soc...

Book Review: The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet

Blurb In a time of civil war, famine and religious strife, there rises a magnificent Cathedral in Kingsbridge. Against this backdrop, lives entwine Tom, the master builder, Aliena, the noblewoman, Philip, the prior of Kingsbridge, Jack, the artist in stone and Ellen, the woman from the forest who casts a curse. At once, this is a sensuous and enduring love story and an epic that shines with the fierce spirit of a passionate age. Review "The most expensive part of a building is the mistakes" The whole story in this book revolves around the building of a Cathedral. Yes!!! mistakes are the most expensive part of a building. This is seen as the story moves forward. I enjoyed the story and it kept me hooked until the end. The best part of the story is the characters never stopped taking revenge till the end.  Plot:   The plot is set in 1135 AD in a fictional town called Kingsbridge during the civil war in England. The story involves the str...
