Blurb
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.Review
Divergent is my first book in the genre of Dystopian. Before reading the book I watched the movie and kind of liked it. So, I thought of reading the entire series so that I could understand the world better.
The plot takes place in the dystopian Chicago where the society is divided into factions. These factions are dedicated to certain kind of qualities which defines their work culture. The factions are not determined by their birth but by their choice. They have the freedom to chose the faction supported by some tests.
The main character Beatrice makes a surprising choice by choosing a completely opposite faction. The story depicts the journey and the struggles of Beatrice to find her place in this new faction. She wants to know where she belongs and she loves to be fearless.
“Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up”
Then there is the love interest, Tobias Eaton a.k.a Four. I really hated their "romantic encounters". It was too much for me. As an individual character, I liked Four.
“Then I realize what it is. It's him. Something about him makes me feel like I am about to fall. Or turn to liquid. Or burst into flames.”
It had all the elements of friendship, love, hate, jealousy, courage, betrayals etc. I found the story to b good and enjoyable. There were some things which I did not find good. But overall I can say good plot, good characters, and good action scenes.
Characters
Beatrice Prior (Tris): A peaceful girl in one of the humble and kind faction. She was bound by many rules in the faction and she just wanted to be wild and free. During the choosing ceremony, she made a surprising choice by selecting a faction which was completely opposite. She is strong and fearless. she is hardworking and she wanted to prove herself in any way she can. She transformed from physically weak to a strong person under the rigorous training. she is loyal to her friends and also kind. She was also smart. It was like she had all the qualities of five factions.
Tobias Eaton (Four): Four is a mysterious guy here. He is a strong leader and he has reached the top at an early age. Tobias is not open and he has secrets. He is also kind and helpful. As the story moves on he becomes more and more open to Tris and creates a very strong bond with her.
Caleb Prior: Caleb is the elder brother of Tris and a very law-abiding guy. He always had a fascination towards learning and during the choosing ceremony, he also chose a different faction. It was shocking since he followed the rules of this faction and it seemed like he would stay. He is a simple guy and not fearless like Tris.
There are more characters like Christina who is a very good friend of Tris. Peter who is the bully. Jeanine Matthews who is a conspirator and also a bitch. The story revolves around all these characters and it is all about survival in this weird dystopian world.
