For years Laia has lived in fear. Fear of the Empire, fear of the Martials, fear of truly living at all. Born as a Scholar, she's never had much of a choice.
For Elias, it's the opposite. He has seen too much on his path to becoming a Mask, one of the Empire's elite soldiers. With the Mask's help, the Empire has conquered a continent and enslaved thousands of Scholars, all in the name of power.
When Laia's brother is taken she must force herself to help the Resistance, the only people who have a chance of saving him. She must spy on the Commandant, ruthless overseer of Blackcliff Academy. Blackcliff is the training ground for Masks and the very place Elias is planning to escape. If he succeeds, he will be named deserter. If found, the punishment will be death.
But once Laia and Elias meet, they find that their destinies are intertwined and their choices will change the fate of Empire.
In the ashes of a broken world, one person can make a difference. One voice in the dark can be heard. The price of freedom is always high and this time that price might demand everything, even life itself.
Review
This book is amazing. I loved everything about this. All the characters are awesome. I liked Laia and Elias. The world is amazing and I liked the writing style. The hype is real for this book.
It has all elements of what a good fantasy should have. Action, betrayal, love, cruelty, friendship etc were all the part of the story. Laia is brave and she will do anything to protect the one she loves. Constantly faced with the doubt whether she can succeed are not but she overcomes it and always complete what she has intended to do. Elias is kind even when he was among the most brutal people. His soul has not tampered even when there are so many cruelties around. He always wants to do the right thing and he stands for what he believes. There are many other characters who are lovable as these two main characters,
The world building is excellent. There was Roman and Middle Eastern vibe. There are mythological creatures, mysterious people and also long histories of the world. There were rebel groups, bad empire, slavery and cruel soldiers. I liked the encounters between Laia and Elias. Everything about this book is fascinating. If you are fantasy lower and love more action then I would highly recommend this book.
